What is the coverage of an AIS satellite?
AIS (Automatic Identification System) is a global technology for the automatic exchange of standardized data between ships, designed to enhance maritime safety and improve traffic management at sea. This system allows vessels equipped with AIS transponders to share essential information such as their position, identity, heading, and speed. These transmissions ensure effective communication between ships and coastal stations.
AIS transponders automatically broadcast information at regular intervals: navigation data is emitted every 2 to 180 seconds depending on the ship's activity, while voyage-related information is sent every 6 minutes. These signals are received by other vessels or land-based systems.
Thus, AIS is an essential navigation aid that enables ships to be visible in challenging conditions, reducing the risk of collisions, particularly in busy traffic areas or low visibility situations. By broadcasting and receiving information about other vessels within a certain radius, AIS helps anticipate potential collision courses and react accordingly.
Initially developed to prevent collisions, AIS is now indispensable in maritime navigation and is used by a wide variety of vessels. AIS data is also utilized by maritime authorities to monitor shipping routes, optimize traffic management, and coordinate emergency responses.
