Is AIS mandatory for all ships?
According to the international SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) regulations, AIS is mandatory for certain types of vessels, depending on their size and type:
- Class A: Class A AIS transponders are required for all merchant ships over 300 gross tons engaged in international voyages, cargo ships over 500 gross tons not engaged in international voyages, as well as all passenger ships, regardless of their size.
- Class B: Class B transponders, which are less expensive and simpler, are intended for smaller vessels that are not subject to SOLAS regulations. This includes pleasure boats, fishing vessels under 15 meters, and other small non-commercial vessels. The installation of these devices is voluntary but allows these vessels to participate in AIS information exchange to enhance their visibility and safety.
Thus, Class A AIS is mandatory for large commercial vessels and passenger ships, while Class B provides an option for smaller vessels, thereby enhancing maritime safety for all types of navigation.
