Combating illegal fishing, piracy, and smuggling

Kinéis' S-AIS data enables the monitoring and detection of illegal fishing vessels, smugglers, and pirates to protect marine ecosystems and local economies.

Illegal fishing: a threat to oceans and local economies

Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing poses a major risk to marine ecosystems and coastal economies. By exploiting resources without adhering to quotas or protected areas, it depletes fish stocks, compromises sustainable management efforts, and threatens endangered species. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), 94% of global fish stocks are fully exploited or overexploited. This practice directly impacts local communities and threatens biodiversity, necessitating effective monitoring solutions to restore a sustainable balance.

Kinéis S-AIS data: essential for monitoring and tracking illegal fishing

Kinéis' S-AIS data plays a crucial role in combating IUU fishing by providing maritime authorities with tracking capabilities for vessels operating in protected areas, such as exclusive economic zones (EEZs). By monitoring every movement, they enable coastal, flag, and port states to respond swiftly, thereby enhancing the security of maritime supply chains from capture to sale. These monitoring systems, supported by Kinéis technology, are essential for preserving marine biodiversity and ensuring that consumers receive products free from illegal practices, thus contributing to the sustainability of marine resources.

Combating piracy with Sat-AIS technology

In 2024, reported incidents of piracy and armed robbery have dropped to their lowest level since 1994, with 79 incidents reported from January to September, compared to 99 the previous year.

While these figures are declining, crew safety remains at risk, as noted by the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) in its latest report. Certain areas, such as the Indonesian archipelago, continue to see a steady increase in attacks, with 17 incidents reported in 2024, up from 12 in 2023 and 9 in 2022. Meanwhile, 295 acts of piracy were recorded in 2023, down from 300 in 2022, although underreporting of incidents persists, with many shipowners hesitant to report attacks for fear of damaging their reputation or increasing their insurance costs.

Strategic S-AIS Data to Secure Trade Routes

Modern piracy is concentrated near major trade routes, where 90% of global commerce transits. For example, the Strait of Malacca, through which a third of global trade passes, remains a critical area. In 2022, 62% of attacks occurred there, particularly in the Singapore Strait. Securing these zones is therefore essential.

Kinéis stands out with its multi-antenna technology, capable of accurately detecting vessel movements even in dense areas. With global coverage and features such as anti-spoofing, Kinéis' S-AIS solutions quickly identify suspicious behaviors, such as sudden course changes or abnormal clustering. This data allows maritime authorities to anticipate threats and respond effectively.

A Decisive Advantage in High-Risk Areas

Regions like the Gulf of Guinea and Southeast Asia have become epicenters of maritime insecurity. In Nigeria, in the Gulf of Guinea, and in maritime areas near the Strait of Malacca, continuous monitoring of vessel movements is indispensable and essential for preventing attacks and quickly responding to threats. Kinéis' S-AIS solutions not only enable rapid tracking of vessels but also cross-reference this data with global information to identify areas to avoid.

Quality Data for Enhanced Security

While the direct fight against piracy falls to naval forces and coast guards, AIS-based systems, such as those from Kinéis, provide crucial support by alerting on high-risk areas and offering vessels information to avoid dangerous zones. Kinéis is not limited to providing data but focuses on its reliability and accuracy. This commitment to data quality enables security forces to act more effectively and allows vessels to respond swiftly in the event of a threat.

By cross-referencing historical S-AIS data with other relevant indicators, such as economic or political events, Kinéis helps anticipate threats and avoid high-risk areas, thereby contributing to crew protection and the maintenance of overall maritime security.

Combating trafficking and smuggling

Carte-antispoofing

Combating maritime drug trafficking requires constant vigilance. Maritime drug trafficking takes place often beyond the reach of land-based networks, making detection impossible.

With our S-AIS data, we have the capability to track atypical navigation routes and identify vessels operating in high-risk areas. We can also alert law enforcement to suspicious movements, such as unusual stops or slowdowns, which may indicate an ongoing exchange.

Maritime security is crucial in the fight against drug trafficking, especially along maritime routes. We support this battle on a global scale, enabling rapid and targeted responses to these threats.
