Kinéis signs with Wood Mackenzie and Vortexa and affirms its European leadership with its satellite AIS solution
Press release • November 18, 2025
Following the launch of its services on June 2, 2025, Kinéis is accelerating the rollout of its satellite-based ship tracking solution. With its offer, Kin’AIS, Kinéis aims to promote safer, more transparent, and more reliable navigation—even in the most remote areas of the globe. This new phase of development comes with the signing of two strategic contracts with Wood Mackenzie and Vortexa, world leaders in data analytics based in the United Kingdom.
Maritime surveillance: a crucial challenge
After the September 11, 2001 attacks, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) made ship tracking mandatory through the implementation of the Automatic Identification System (AIS). Vessels are now required to regularly transmit their position, identity, heading, and speed.
In addition to enhancing navigational safety, AIS also strengthens the capabilities of maritime authorities and search and rescue teams. However, AIS data collected through terrestrial infrastructure have limitations. The radio-frequency signal emitted by ships covers less than 100 km, and some coastal areas remain unmonitored for geopolitical reasons.
“Today, terrestrial AIS cannot effectively meet all the needs of maritime stakeholders. Thanks to our expertise, we seized the opportunity to bridge that gap in data access. In a market undergoing major consolidation, we are proud to have built a 100% French solution that guarantees data autonomy and integrity. Kinéis now stands as a leading European sovereign player, combining technological excellence with strategic independence”, said Cécile Morel, Chief Commercial Officer at Kinéis.
Kin’AIS by Kinéis: a breakthrough innovation
Since June 2025, maritime players have been able to leverage Kinéis’ S-AIS technology to gain regular and accurate access to the information they need, even on the high seas.
The AIS data collected by the Kinéis constellation help optimize supply chains, thereby reducing costs and risks. They also enhance global maritime traffic surveillance, enabling the detection of suspicious behaviors linked to illegal fishing, piracy, or smuggling.
Unlike terrestrial AIS or other satellite AIS solutions, Kinéis ensures superior signal reception quality in dense areas. Thanks to its multi-beam antennas, Kinéis captures a significantly higher share of signals in congested maritime zones—such as the Gulf of Mexico, the Suez Canal, and the Persian Gulf—offering better performance than traditional satellites equipped with single-beam antennas.
Another major innovation from Kinéis is its advanced spoofing protection system. The company has developed a sophisticated anti-spoofing solution called Kin’Trust63, which determines a vessel’s exact position with an average accuracy of about 5 km.
Becoming a global reference in S-AIS
Barely entering the market, Kinéis’ Kin’AIS solution has already gained the trust of leading industry players. The French company has signed two strategic contracts with Wood Mackenzie and Vortexa, both global leaders in data analytics headquartered in the UK.
Wood Mackenzie is a global leader in data and analytics for renewables, energy, and natural resources.
“We’re thrilled to partner with the Kinéis team on this exciting venture. At a time when industry consolidation has become the norm, it’s refreshing to welcome an innovative new player to the market. By integrating Kinéis’ high-performance S-AIS data with our existing AIS capabilities, we’re ensuring that Wood Mackenzie’s vesseltracker.com delivers industry-leading intelligence—empowering our clients in the Maritime and Commodity Analytics sectors with the insights they require to make better decisions.” said Dallas Smith, Wood Mackenzie SVP, Maritime.
Vortexa provides real-time data and insights on global energy and freight markets, tracking over $3 trillion in annual maritime energy transactions.
“At Vortexa, we continuously enhance our database by integrating the world’s best satellite and terrestrial AIS sources. The Kinéis constellation adds a new dimension to our global coverage, strengthening Vortexa’s real-time and predictive analytics capabilities across energy and freight markets” said Fabio Kuhn, Founder and CEO of Vortexa.
With these new clients, Kinéis strengthens its position as a leading provider of satellite AIS services and confirms its ambition: to transmit several million AIS messages per day, delivering a detailed and reliable view of global maritime traffic.
