What's the difference between GPS and AIS?
The coverage of an AIS satellite refers to its ability to pick up signals from vessels equipped with AIS transponders. With Kinéis S-AIS satellites, you benefit from 100% global coverage, wherever your boats are sailing. Our satellite constellation ensures continuous, reliable monitoring of all maritime movements, even in remote or densely populated areas.
This not only enhances maritime safety, but also facilitates traffic management and helps meet environmental challenges. Thanks to this comprehensive coverage, you can rely on Kinéis for accurate data on ships, wherever they may be on the globe.
GPS (Global Positioning System) and AIS (Automatic Identification System) are two key maritime systems, but they perform different functions.
Functionality
- GPS: This is a satellite-based navigation system that pinpoints the exact location of a ship. It provides data on latitude, longitude, speed and course.
- AIS: Unlike GPS, AIS is a communication system. It enables ships to transmit and receive precise information, such as their identity, position and speed, as well as other data for navigation and safety at sea.
Data transmission
- GPS: GPS data is mainly used on board to aid navigation and is not automatically shared with other vessels or authorities.
- AIS: AIS information is sent by the ship's transponder and can be received by other ships and coastal stations, and by satellites equipped with AIS receivers.
Technology : - GPS: uses a network of satellites to send signals to GPS receivers on board ships.
- AIS: This system uses VHF radio signals to transmit data, requiring specific equipment to operate.
In short, GPS focuses on the precise location of a vessel, while AIS facilitates the exchange of essential information between ships and various professionals, enhancing the safety and efficiency of global maritime navigation.
